The fifth album in our anthology has a special structure. The undoubted centre of gravity is the Third Symphony with its central ‘E’, widely, although not unanimously, considered to be Lutosławski’s greatest work, showered with awards ranging from the independent laurel of Solidarity to the first Grawemeyer Award. The composition is supplemented with works that come from decades before. The Symphony was completed in 1983. The Silesian Triptych and the Little Suite date back to the ‘socialist realism’ years. From before World War II are the Symphonic Variations and Lacrimosa. The Variations marked the composer’s actual debut on the large stage, while Lacrimosa was part of his diploma thesis at the Conservatory.
