Listening to music performed in a concert setting is radically different from experiencing music in the comfort of one’s home. Concert listening is listening in public, with others, in the same place, at the same time. Home listening is private listening, often done alone. It takes place in the comfort and intimacy of one’s own space, on one’s own terms. Perhaps this is why this kind of listening is more honest and direct. The relationship we create with music this way can become more personal and long-lasting. Listening at home frees us from the obligation to listen while sitting in complete silence and concentration, often while holding our breath. We can also return to recorded music many times, getting to know it more and more closely, becoming more familiar with it. We can listen differently each time, noticing new details and nuances of timbre, form and musical language. We can recognise and enjoy a multitude of references and contexts, both musical and non-musical, which would certainly not be possible with a single concert listening.
The album you are holding in your hands is an invitation to create such a personal, intimate relationship with music. You can take it with you for a walk in the forest or on a long journey. I hope that the music of Paul Preusser, Nikolet Burzyńska and Nikola Kołodziejczyk – brilliantly performed by the LutosAir Quintet and its guests – will give you a lot of pleasure and encourage you to return many times.
