This album provides insight into almost a hundred years of musical development and reflects the aspirations of the Polish national school as seen in the works of its three important composers. The foundations of the national style were created by Karol Kurpiński, and his Fantasia for string quartet is as serious as it is inventive in form. Zygmunt Noskowski, considered the leading Polish composer in the last decade of his life, was a mentor to generations of musicians and created a witty piece on a theme taken from Viotti, which includes a fragment in the alla polacca style. Stanisław Moniuszko’s quartets combine features present in hymns with rustic elements, they are full of life, surprising and invigorating.
