When we think about Leoš Janáček's work today, what comes to mind are the masterpieces of the last period: great operas, headed by Jenůfa, string quartets, the Glagolitic Mass. But the repertoire of string orchestras also includes well-written early pieces: Suite and Idyll. The last works of the first period are dated 1880, just two years after Idyll, and there is a break of several years in the composer’s catalogue of works (until 1894, when he began writing Jenůfa), during which, apart from the conventional opera Šarka (1888), only a handful of useful choral music was composed. But that is when Janáček became Janáček.
